Greg Smith, husband of the late Senator Debbie Smith and retired apprenticeship coordinator for the Operating Engineers Local 3 in Reno, has been appointed by the Washoe County Commission to Assembly District 30, replacing Mike Sprinkle, who stepped down earlier this month after allegations of sexual harrassment.

Smith spent more than 35 years with OE3, including many years as coordinator for the local's apprenticeship program, training new generations of engineers in Northern Nevada before his retirement in 2012. To Assembly District 30, which includes much of Sparks, including downtown, Smith hopes to bring improvements in infrastructure and opportunities for workforce training and job creation.

"We're pleased with the appointment of Greg Smith to the Nevada State Assembly," said Robert Benner, secretary-treasurer of the Northern Nevada Central Labor Council. "Greg understands the importance of workers rights, expanding workforce and training opportunities, and strengthening the labor community in Northern Nevada."
